Curriculum Breakdown
Mrs. Warren’s Fifth Grade Class 2015-2016
Math: This year fifth grade students will continue using the Bridges curriculum in addition to some supplemental materials. Students will be assigned math homework Monday-Thursday, and should also study their math facts nightly. Beginning in October-Students will be switching classes (between Miss Brady & Mrs. Warren) based on their needs during math class on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursdays.
Reading: Fifth grade students will continue to have a 90 minute literacy block daily. This literacy block will include introduction to reading/writing strategies, word work, independent reading, reading groups, novel studies etc.
Benchmark Literacy: We will continue to use our Benchmark Literacy reading program this school year. Benchmark Literacy lends itself very well to instruction during the 90 minute literacy block. This new reading series involves a daily mini- lesson and reading workshop. The reading workshop consists of a variety of activities which will be completed mostly in small group settings. Students will also be responsible for journaling and responding to what they are reading in their reader’s notebooks.
AR: Each individual student will be assigned an individualized reading goal. This goal is based on the STAR reading assessment given quarterly. Students will have some time during the school day to read independently, although students are expected to read at least 20 minutes nightly in addition to this.
Students will receive two grades per 9-weeks based on their AR reading goal along with their comprehension score.
(Comprehension: 50 pts, Goal completion: 25)
Spelling (Word Work): Students will be assigned new spelling words/word work words at the beginning of each week. These words are compiled from Benchmark Literacy, and will also include some content vocabulary from other areas of the curriculum. Students will work in class on various word work activities during the 90 minute literacy block. Students will also be expected to take their spelling words home each night in order to prepare for their Friday spelling assessment. The Friday assessment will also include dictation sentences. Students will be graded on their usage of grammar, punctuation, and spelling. Word work grades will primarily be a part of their language arts grade.
Language/Writing: Students will be working on multiple writing pieces throughout the school year. The majority of the writing will be completed in class. Students will also be reviewing and learning multiple grammar skills throughout the year.
Social Studies: This year we will be implementing a new Social Studies series from McGraw Hill. Students will be learning all about our United States Geography and History. There will also be a number of activities and projects completed in class. Some reading and note completion may be required for homework. Mrs. Warren will be teaching Social Studies to all fifth graders this year.
Science: Students will be doing a combination of science observations, experiments, and projects throughout the school year. Some reading an note completion may be required for homework. Miss Brady will be teaching Science/Health to all fifth graders this year.
**Students will be taking notes throughout the week for both Social Studies and Science. These notes should be coming home with them nightly via their binder. Please review these notes nightly to ensure students are prepared for tests/quizzes.
Other important information:
Students will be required to fill out their assignment notebook daily. All homework assignments will be visible throughout the school day, and students will be responsible for completing these assignments by their due date.
Late Work Policy:
A major goal of our fifth grade year will be learning how to prepare for sixth grade. We strongly believe that students should learn the importance of taking responsibility of nightly assignments. All homework should be turned in prior to morning announcements.
Consequences for Late Work:
5% will be taken off for any assignment turned in after morning announcements/morning bell.
An additional 10% will be taken from the final assignment grade each day after its initial due date.
Additionally, students with multiple late assignments will lose recess privileges in order to complete their missing/late work. Please be conscientious of Skyward, as Miss Brady and Mrs. Warren will have assignments updated promptly.
If you have any questions about any of this information, please do not hesitate to contact Mrs. Warren or Miss Brady at any time.
